Demonstrated Interest
Statement of Purpose
When you visit campus in Malibu, meet current students, and engage with our admission team, you are more likely to understand what sets Pepperdine apart from other colleges. We want you to have every opportunity to learn about Pepperdine and decide whether you can truly see yourself here. We seek to enroll students who are not only academically prepared but also genuinely eager to engage with our community, spiritual life, and rigorous academic environment. Thus, we encourage you to demonstrate your interest in attending Pepperdine.
Assessing “demonstrated interest” allows us to identify students who are uniquely
aligned with our mission. In keeping with our Christian commitment to justice, hospitality,
and equity, we evaluate a student's engagement through a holistic lens. We ensure
that students from all socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds have meaningful pathways
to show their enthusiasm for our community.
How Interest is Tracked and Evaluated
Demonstrated interest serves as a contextual factor in our holistic review process, helping us understand a student’s alignment with our campus mission. While we love hosting students on campus and conducting interviews, we recognize that distance and financial constraints can limit travel. We track and value engagement across a variety of touchpoints:
- On-Campus Visits and Events: We highly value the opportunity to welcome you to our campus. Attending an official campus tour or open house is an excellent way to experience our community, spiritual life, academic, and living spaces firsthand.
- Admission Interviews (first-year students only): Whether conducted on campus, virtually, regionally, or with an alumnus, completing an admissions interview allows us to hear your story, discuss your faith and academic journey, and evaluate your fit for our institutional mission.
- Virtual and Local Engagement: For students unable to travel, we fully track and equally value participation in virtual information sessions, online student panels, virtual tours, or meetings with our admission counselors at local high schools and college fairs.
- Application Care and Alignment: Submitting a thoughtful, specific response to our supplemental essay question—explaining
why you are called to study and grow within our Christian community—is one of the
strongest indicators of interest we evaluate.
Application Tracks and Inferred Interest
The application timeline a student chooses is a significant indicator of intent:
- Early Decision I & II (Binding): This is the ultimate expression of demonstrated interest. Students applying ED have identified us as their absolute first choice and will receive thorough consideration within that context.
- Early Action/Regular Decision (Non-Binding): Students in these pools are evaluated equally. For these applicants, the accessible
engagement markers listed in Section 2 help us understand who is highly likely to
enroll if admitted.
